Why erotic?

It’s my nature.It’s how I’m wired. I think I’ve always seen things through a sexual filter. I’ve given up fighting it.

 

Talk to us about sexual politics.

I’m obsessed with the sexual power play between people, how love can be a mind-fuck as well as a blow job, how love often distances us from each other and how it all plays out. I’m very fond of that unattributed quote: “Everything is about sex except sex. Sex is about power.”

 

What are you working on these days?

My full-length collection, Angeles Noir, will be finished this spring. The poems are set in various L.A. locales, and riff on the dual theme of connection and alienation. Expect tattooed women, disenfranchised poets, copious amounts of sex, time travel, unsolved homicides, skewed Hollywood romance– a rather WeeGee-esque view of the goings on about town, L.A.-style.

 

You identify foremost as a poet. What made you choose to focus primarily on poetry rather than photography?

Poetry is harder.

 

Talk to us about your photography.

Just begun is a monthly photo essay in Cultural Weekly, an ongoing exploration of Los Angeles and its inhabitants. There’s a one woman show coming up in April (see #14). The L.A. Poets Project will continue as I document our vibrant poetry scene and photograph as many poets as possible, with an eye toward publishing a book.

 

What’s on deck for you in 2015?

A chapbook, State of Grace: The Dead Kid Poems will be published later this year. Angeles Noir will be in search of a publisher. I’m looking forward to continuing as Cultural Weekly‘s poetry editor, and to featuring the best and most diverse poets I can find. We’re gearing up for our third annual poetry contest which starts in July. Last year we received over 1,000 poems! I have a number of readings lined up, including gigs at Soapbox Poets, The Ugly Mug, Roar Shack, and a two-woman show withe the spectacular Leslie Ann Mcilroy at Beyond Baroque on June 19th. My one-woman photo show of 30 Los Angeles poets opens at Beyond Baroque on April 4th, 2015, in conjunction with National Poetry Month.

 

What is the best part of being considered an “erotic” poet?

I love it when people come up to me after a reading or respond to a published poem by sharing a very private story of their own. I like how I am sometimes able to give them “permission.”

 

Do you write every day? Do you edit your work? Can you type type type?

Yes.
