Escape

By Dennis Cruz

Poem

arms,
like ribs,
pulled
over
my heart.
a cacophony
of beating
and breathing.
waves
and waves
of fear
rippling
over
a glistening
skin.
the damp pillow
smashed
beneath
my restless
face.
one train
of thought
crashing
into the next.
nothing
to separate
the dreams
from the
memories.
and the old
familiar
panic…
nestles
like
a swarm
of bees,
humming,
in my ear.
two white
pills,
one yellow
and two blue…
all racing
the second
hand of
the clock
ticking…
and ticking
night
toward
dawn.
mumbling
prayers
and promises
revealing
secrets
and confessing
sins….
all just
lost
in the drone
of stars,
silent
as sentinels.
no answers
no revelations,
just a quiet
knowing.
and the gentle
whispers
of voices
with nothing
but questions
to pose.
trying to put
faces
on the blank
of the void.
restless again.
nervous again.
lost as always.
deciding
finally,
that finding,
like believing,
only brings
me….
back to my self
back to where
I was trying to escape.
