in our lives
we will talk about fathers
in our white wet dresses
with tobacco undernails, handgloves

& beaded mantilla veils
with the posture of a dressmaker’s mannequin

with desert water sprayed thick like the rotting
at the vanity with a soft gilt hairbrush

with good-girl pearls, merciless rouge
& a sea-foam girdle too big to hold in

what could only be called a devastating grief:
all the sneaky negroamaro in the cracks of our mouths

because when we talk about fathers we are

under and over-developed at once
almostwomen who

hide a lifetime at the bottom of a Givenchy
compressed into a small golden tube

with a distinct deliberate hunger
[we are death,                             we never eat in the

with our tits falling out of our windows,
an unmovable desire to be filled &  poured,

waving handkerchiefs as though the soldiers are
coming   home from war.
