Please explain what just happened.
It all happened so fast…
What is your earliest memory?
Being doused in talcum powder by my older brother when I was a toddler.
If you weren’t an actor, what other profession would you choose?
I can’t even imagine not acting. However, I think I’d like to pursue any artistic calling – writer, painter, musician or sculptor. I have this need to continually be creating something, and any profession that allowed me to do that would be okay by me. Although, being a rock star or professional athlete would be pretty cool, too.
Describe a typical work day.
Depends on the day. If I’m acting, then I’m up early, get to set, have a wicked vegan breakfast, review my script notes and then go pretend. If I’m producing or writing, I’ll wake up early, make a big cup of coffee and watch or read something inspiring before sitting down at the computer and tackling the to-do list.
Is there a time you wish you’d lied?
Sometimes I wish I hadn’t lied. Sometimes I wish I had lied more. And, other times, I just wish I had lied better. Mostly I wish I hadn’t put myself in a situation that made lying an option.
What would you say to yourself if you could go back in time and have a conversation with yourself at age thirteen?
Have faith. Believe in yourself, always. Anyone ‘cool’ at age 13 probably won’t be by the time it really matters. Be kind to everyone, including the animals. Read lots. Be present. Create something new every day. Make mistakes. Question everything. Have fun and enjoy the ride.
If you could have only one album to get you through a breakup, what would it be?
Damn, good question; my buddies and I have the “what album” debate all the time. For a breakup it’d have to be something that could cover the spectrum of emotions involved with a broken heart. And, of course, a caveat: any “what album” question has to be a snapshot in time. With that, I think I’d have to go with Bon Iver For Emma, Forever Ago or The National Boxer. Although, The Pogues “Best of” sure would be good to drown away the sorrow. I’ve totally messed this question up. Breaking up is hard – even the music!
What are three websites—other than your email—that you check on a daily basis?
From what or whom do you derive your greatest inspiration?
My family— they are my greatest fans and my biggest allies. Unwavering.
Name three books that have impacted your life.
The Power of One, The War of Art, The Dancing Wu-Li Masters.
If you could relive one moment over and over again, what would it be?
The first time I performed on stage. Amazing.
How are you six degrees from Kevin Bacon?
Two degrees. I worked with Rebecca Davis on Focus, a film I co-wrote and produced. She worked with Kevin on Where The Truth Lies.
What makes you feel most guilty?
Other than taking too long to answer these questions?
How do you incorporate the work of other artists into your own?
I’m continually inspired and invigorated by everything around me. It’s really unconscious and unpredictable— almost osmosis.
Please explain the motivation/inspiration behind your role as Crowe in Elysium.
I researched a lot about professional soldiers and ultimately decided that the members of the 32 Battalion in South Africa were the perfect inspiration for Crowe. They were elite South African soldiers fighting in very interesting times. I read as many books, interviews and articles I could to try and fully immerse myself in their world.
What is the best advice you’ve ever given to someone else?
It’s also the best advice I ever received. Do what you love and find a way to make money doing it.
List your favorite in the following categories: Comedian, Musician, Author, Actor.
Comedian – Louis C.K.
Musician – Langhorne Slim
Author – Roberston Davies
Actor – Daniel Day Lewis
If you had complete creative license and an unlimited budget, what would your next project be?
A film I’m co-writing with my writing/directing partner, Chris Young. It’s a feature film about soldiers returning from war, the mental illness they suffer from and the difficulty reintegrating into society.
What do you want to know?
What would you like your last words to be?
I love you too.
Please explain what will happen.
Life will go on. Enjoy it.
JOSH BLACKER makes his feature film debut in Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium as South African mercenary “Crowe” opposite Jodi Foster, Matt Damon, Sharlto Copley, and Diego Luna. Set in the year 2154, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Government officials will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. Blacker’s upcoming independent projects include Focus and The Last Crop. Blacker has previously appeared on “Supernatural,” “Stargate: Atlantis,” “Blood Ties,” “V,” “SGU Stargate Universe,” “Fringe,” and “Transporter: The Series.”
